Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8 this year, and some time in the week before it a lot of people will stare at a blank message to a colleague, a neighbour or an old university friend and type "Happy Diwali!!" with two exclamation marks because nothing else comes. That is not wrong. But a line or two more, written for that person, is what turns a polite greeting into one they remember.

This guide gives you Diwali wishes for the people you actually know: close friends, coworkers, a manager, clients and neighbours, plus what to send if you are late. It also covers a few details that make a message sound informed rather than copied.

What Diwali Wishes Usually Celebrate

Diwali, also called Deepavali, is the festival of lights. Homes are lit with small clay lamps called diyas, families share sweets and new clothes, and the main themes are light over darkness, renewal and prosperity for the year ahead. Those three ideas give you most of the vocabulary you need. A message about light, a fresh start or a full and happy home always fits.

The festival runs about five days. The main day, Lakshmi Puja, is the one most people mean by Diwali. For many Gujarati families the day after marks the start of a new year, which is why you will sometimes see "Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak" together. If that fits someone you know, the ideas in our piece on New Year messages and good fortune carry over well.

Who Celebrates, and Why You Should Not Assume

The usual advice is simple: wish every Indian colleague a Happy Diwali. That advice is well meant and a little careless. India has large Muslim, Christian and other communities who do not celebrate Diwali, and plenty of people of Indian heritage are not Hindu. Meanwhile, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists mark the same days for their own reasons.

  • Hindu friends: Happy Diwali or Shubh Deepavali both work.
  • Sikh friends: the same day is Bandi Chhor Divas. "Happy Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali" is a thoughtful touch.
  • Jain friends: Diwali marks the nirvana of Mahavira, so a quieter, reflective tone often suits.
  • Malaysia, Singapore and South India: "Happy Deepavali" is the more common name.

If you are unsure, send it only to people you know celebrate, or ask a week ahead: "Are you doing anything for Diwali?" It is a friendly question, and the answer tells you what to write.

Diwali Wishes for Close Friends and Family Friends

With close friends you can be warm, specific and a little playful. Mention the food, the family or a memory.

Happy Diwali, Priya! I hope the house is full of lamps, noise and far too many sweets. Save me one kaju katli this year, I still think about the last box.

Wishing you and the whole family a bright Diwali. Thank you for always inviting me in like I belong there. May the year ahead be as generous as your mum's dinner table.

Shubh Deepavali! Here is to new clothes, late nights and a year that is kinder than the last one.

For a friend celebrating far from home, acknowledge the distance: "I know Diwali is not the same away from your family, so light a diya for me and call me after."

Diwali Wishes for Coworkers and a Manager

At work, keep it short, warm and free of anything you would not say out loud in a meeting. Two or three sentences is right for a chat message or a card passed around the team. The same principles we use for holiday card messages for coworkers you barely know apply here.

For a teammate

Happy Diwali, Arjun! I hope you get a proper break with your family this week. Enjoy the lights and the food, and do not open your laptop.

For a manager

Wishing you and your family a happy and peaceful Diwali. Thank you for a good year on the team, and I hope the festival brings a well earned rest.

For a whole team

Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating this week. May your homes be full of light and your inboxes very quiet.

If someone is taking leave for the festival, mention it. "Enjoy your days off" shows you noticed, and it makes the greeting about them rather than about the calendar.

Messages for Clients, Neighbours and Acquaintances

For people you know less well, the safest theme is light and a good year ahead. Avoid business pitches in the same message; a Diwali greeting with a sales offer attached reads as an advert.

WhoSample line
ClientWishing you and your team a bright Diwali and a prosperous year ahead. It has been a pleasure working together.
NeighbourYour lamps make the whole street look beautiful. Happy Diwali to all of you.
Parent at schoolHappy Diwali to your family. I hope the kids enjoy every minute of it.
Landlord or tenantWarm Diwali wishes to you and your family, and thank you for a smooth year.

If you are dropping off a small box of sweets, a handwritten tag with one of these lines is better than a printed card.

Small Details That Make a Message Feel Informed

Three details separate a thoughtful Diwali message from a generic one.

  1. Spell the festival words correctly. Diwali, Deepavali, diya, rangoli. If you use a Hindi phrase like Shubh Deepavali, check the spelling once. A misspelled phrase undoes the effort.
  2. Send it on time. The evening before the main day or that morning is ideal. Within the five days of the festival is still fine.
  3. Skip the firecracker emojis and stickers on work channels. Plain words read as more sincere, and many families now celebrate without fireworks for air quality reasons.

Our broader advice on holiday greetings that do not sound like a template explains why one personal detail beats three borrowed lines.

Diwali Message Questions

Is it all right to wish someone Happy Diwali if I do not celebrate?

Yes. Most people who celebrate are pleased to be wished well by friends and colleagues of any background. A short, sincere message is always welcome.

What should I write if I missed Diwali?

Own it lightly: "Belated Diwali wishes! I hope the festival was full of light and good food. I would love to hear how it went." Within a week or so, that reads as warm, not careless.

Should I mention Lakshmi or other religious details?

Only if you know the person well and know how they observe it. For most messages, light, family and a good year ahead say enough without getting the details wrong.

Write It Before the Week Gets Busy

Make a list tonight of the five or six people you want to wish, note one detail for each, such as their kids, their cooking or their leave, and draft the messages now. On November 7 or the morning of the 8th, send them. Five minutes of planning is the difference between a copied line and a greeting that sounds like you.
